How skincare changed my life and confidence

Published on

With busy days and a rapid pace of life, it’s difficult to find some well-deserved me-time. And me-time isn’t just watching Netflix alone in bed but taking the time to look after yourself and reflect on your thoughts.

My me-time? Doing my night-time skincare routine. My journey with skincare started at 15. My makeup routine back then was simple: foundation, concealer, powder, mascara. The fact that I would leave the house with a one-dimensional face makes me sick, but hey. When it came to removal, a makeup wipe would suffice.

But realised a few things: my makeup wouldn’t stay on for long nor sit on my face very well, the skin underneath was textured, and by the evening my makeup was broken up and crusty looking. So, this is where the first step came and one that my older sister had begged me to do for months: washing my face before bed.

I would still use the makeup wipe but using a facewash afterwards made sure every grain of makeup was off. After a week, I saw MAJOR results. My skin looked that little bit clearer (even though I was in the peak of puberty) and my makeup stayed put, looking more flawless.

This birthed an obsession. My sister began working for Clarins and would come home with creams, serums and oils galore. Having her for guidance and watching countless YouTube videos on looking after your skin, I became infatuated with making my skin look good.

I realised your makeup can only look as good as the skin underneath and the importance of looking after it became extremely apparent.

My everyday makeup routine!

Now, my night-time skincare routine is slightly more complex and has my friends wondering how I can be bothered to do it all – especially when I’ve had a heavy night. I use an oil cleanser to break down my makeup, facewash, toner, serums/acids and finally, moisturiser.

Two of my favourite products! Linked above as toner and acid.

But my routine hasn’t just saved my skin from texture, blemishes and clogged pores. It’s done wonders for my mental health. Massaging my face and taking some time out to take care of myself makes me feel better. The better-looking skin comes as a bonus and helps me feel more confident. For those of you who don’t know what you’re doing, just do your research! I promise there are YouTube videos and articles aplenty to help you figure out your skin type and the best products for you.
